Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement)

Using the Zadok Priestly Solar Calendar Yom Kippur lands on the Gregorian date of September 27th 2024. The observance on Yom Kippur is one of the Moedim besides Passover to be held evening to evening. So we will start the observance from the evening of the 26th and runs through the evening of the 27th.

Yom Kippur is called the Day of Atonement. It is observed on the 10th day of the seventh month. Yom Kippur is a Sabbath on which no work is to be done.

Lev 23:27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto YAHUAH.

Lev 23:28 And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before YAHUAH your ELOHIYM.

Lev 23:29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

Lev 23:30 And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.

Lev 23:31 Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Lev 23:32 It shall be unto you a Sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Sabbath.

Yom Kippur is the most solemn day on the Hebrew calendar. It is a time of soul searching and fasting.

Atonement is translated from the Hebrew word “kaphar” which means to “cover over”. Our sins are “covered over” by the blood of YAHUSHA. This was the time that the High Priest would go once a year into the Holy of Holies and make 3 confessions; those for his sins, for the sins of the priestly tribe of Levi and lastly, for the nation of Yisrael (Israel). The confession on this date was the only time they actually called aloud upon the set apart name of YAHUAH. This was probably different before the Babylonian captivity, but afterwards the set apart name was prohibited to even utter, except at this one time per year.

The High Priest of Yisrael (Israel) would make an offering of a bull and two goats. One of the two goats was known as the scapegoat (Azazel). It was selected by drawing lots; one lot, a white stone was marked for YAHUAH and the other, a black stone for Azazel. According to the Jews, for 200 years prior to 30 AD, the drawing was usually random. The black stone would come up as often as the white one. But after 30 AD and for 40 years prior to the destruction of the temple, the black stone for Azazel came up 40 straight times in the priests right hand.

The sins of the people were laid upon the scapegoat and it was sent off into the wilderness. Also, a scarlet ribbon was tied to a horn of the scapegoat and the other end tied to the door of the temple. It was cut when the scapegoat was sent away. When it died, the ribbon on the temple door turned white signifying that Yisrael’s (Israel’s) sins were forgiven. But after the execution of YAHUSHA in 30 AD, the ribbon never again turned white.

Jewish tradition says that on the final services of Yom Kippur, it was believed that the gates of heaven were once again closed. When the great trumpet was sounded at the close of Yom Kippur, the gates were believed to be closed and the books were shut for another year. This is pure speculation on the part of the Jews as this is not found in scripture.

Personal Commentary:

Yom Kippur can be a fast but it can also be some form of denial not limited to fasting.

Yom Kippur The Day of Atonement

There is a warning or actually a threat here in Lev. 23:29 that is sharper than working on other feasts where the penalty is a cutting off from the community, whereas here (for working on (The Day of Atonement), the penalty is the utter destruction of the individual.

If you thought that The Eternal only had weekly Sabbath Days then you would be mistaken.

There are SEVEN Annual Holy Sabbaths that occur once every year.

The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is one of the most important Annual Sabbaths YAHUAH wants us to keep and guard.

For those who aren’t familiar is one of the seven Times Appointed for all generations forever in the Old Testament of Scripture. It is the second to last Appointed Times. It is essential and gracious and is extraordinarily powerful.

It is not only a time to just fasting of food or pleasure only. It is a deep cleaning of person by forced abandonment of sin. The only fasting is that of the ego actually.

After keeping the Feasts many years in faith that ABBA would bring me to understand the meaning of His Divine Appointments despite my Christian upbringing I finally understood Yom Kippur and learned to cherish the power of a soul afflicted.

There is a form of righteousness (godliness) that fools us into powerlessness without our even knowing it. Do you find yourself continuing in sin? Have you humbled yourself?

The Hebrew word is not fast.. it is humble.. anah.

A humbling… is the very key that unlocks the power of holiness (godliness), and supercharges prayer and allows us to produce an abundance of fruit… and so fittingly right before the greater harvest.

How do you humble yourself?

The only thing that I have seen that truly humbles and cleanses is confronting each sin in our life and defeating them one by one by confessing them and correcting them through disciplined practice. Go to those who you have wronged and apologize specifically for your fault and make amends despite the dreaded or actual cost.

Pay your debts, make good on your word to others, shock your enemies with only loving and forgiving responses even to harsh rebuke, spite or bitter chastisement, apologize to every single person you defrauded or caused harm, force yourself to clear your conscience of everything you have done, every attitude or thought that was wrong or false or unjust or uncaring, or spiteful, or arrogant, or rebellious, anything you did that caused or influenced another to sin. Repent forcefully.

Become blameless by the renewal of a guiltless mind, and force your body to continue until everything has been addressed. Accept that your act of humility may not be gracefully accepted by those who you have wronged and know that it may be difficult to even open your mouth to confess for fear of brutal human rejection at times. You will be extremely terrified at the possible consequences and it will be uncomfortable… But you will see what Grace is.

Confront your sin and force it into the light until there is nothing left. Discipline yourself to accept the consequences.

If you do this you will be humbled and you will not want to continue in sin. You will destroy the power of temptation in your life.

Do not be fooled into thinking that you somehow got away with things that were wrong and do not quench the spirit when it tries to help you clean house by bringing sin to your mind. Get it over with. All things will be laid bare, the truth will find you out, there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed. Get rid of your guilt and humble yourself in the sight of The Almighty and you will know that He has noticed you.

In fact, you will be astonished at the mercy you will receive.

Yom Kippur… The Day of Atonement….

Decorating the temple before a banquet cannot happen until the temple is clean.

Afflict your soul and clean it.

And this shall be a statute forever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourns among you:

  • I was just studying this and have a question. Sept. 29 lands on a Friday, which is the preparation Day for the Sabbath. But we are to do no work, so how do we reconcile that?

    • Actually Day of Atonement is a Annual Sabbath and for this observance we start the Evening before. So since we have 2 Sabbaths one right after the other we must prepare the day of the 28th before sunset. However, a annual sabbath is a little different than a regular weekly sabbath. On a High Sabbath we are not to do Servile work. Such as employment. Weekly Sabbath no work at all. So on an Annual Sabbath you can do things around the house so long there is no commerce involved. Weekly Sabbath we kick back and rest … Hope this help

  • Very eye-opening….. is all I can say at this point because I’m still processing…. Thank you for the time and effort that you put into this…. Yahuah bless you.
